I am an Australian with a British Passport having spent 13 years living in the UK, I am an ex police officer, mother of two and proud procrastinator. My husband's work brought us to Switzerland almost 3 years ago, and from here I have learnt a few things about myself - I like talking and I like not working. I haven't quite mastered the German language yet, but I'm sure after 10 more years I'll be able to string a sentence together...
I love being in Switzerland and I'm super excited to be making this podcast for expats, for those who want to know what its like living away from friends and family and for those that just miss my sweet and soothing voice!
It has been more than six months since I've had to correct people on the following question, "Wow, Don, so you're moving to Sweden?"
Well, no, actually it's Switzerland.
We decided to come to the land of chocolate, cheese and lederhosen for my wife's job in the summer of 2016 and, after some convincing, she decided to bring along our two kids and me. We made the move from Ohio to Switerzland more than six months ago and, by now, most of the adjustment has been made. Still, living in a new country for the first time continues to be a learning experience each and every day.
I hope to share those experiences — good and bad — or until Suzi and Emma come to their senses. I mean, I can't understand why they get bored when I talk golf or Cleveland sports? (Spoiler: That's honestly all I know.)
Hey, I'm Emma. I was born in the US but my family moved to Basel, Switzerland when I was not even two years old. We were originally here for six months – 21 years later, we’re still here! Since I grew up here and went through the local school system, Switzerland is the closest thing to a home that I have.
I’m currently a student at the University of Basel and a sort-of expert on cultural life here. I have plenty of experience explaining to my grandparents how life works here – doing my best not to throw in random German words when I couldn’t think of the English one. I will do the same for you. And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, just come listen to me being awkward on air. Fun either way!
